Anti-malarial medications are used to treat malaria, which is a deadly disease which can be transmitted via mosquito bites. This is a prescription medicine which can kill the parasite responsible for malaria at different stages of its lifecycle. These medicines can be taken before, during and after travel to countries where malaria is a risk.
At Pharmacy Planet, we have several UK-approved options for treating and preventing malaria. Malarone is a well-tolerated tablet that can be taken once a day for a short period of time to help with malaria. There is also Doxycycline, which is a daily tablet that can also provide treatment and protection against other travel-related infections. Lariam is usually taken weekly and can be suitable for long-term trips, but it puts you at risk of more side effects. Our clinical team will help guide you toward the most effective anti-malarial treatment for you.
The appropriate anti-malarial medication depends on the country or region you’re visiting. This is because certain strains of malaria can vary in drug resistance. If you’re unsure of what medicine you should be requesting, you can get in touch with our clinical team to provide recommendations as to the most effective and suitable medicine based on current guidelines set out by the NHS and WHO.
SWhen you should start taking anti-malarial medication depends on the type of medicine you have been prescribed. For Malarone, you should begin to take this 1-2 days before travelling and continue to take it daily during your trip and for an additional 7 days once you have returned. For Doxycycline, start 1-2 days before travelling, then take daily during travel and continue this medicine for 28 days after. For Lariam, start your treatment 2-3 weeks before travel to assess your tolerance to the medicine, then take it once a week during travel and then for 4 additional weeks once returning. Make sure to use the medication in accordance with your doctor's instructions to ensure maximum effectiveness and protection against malaria.
All medicines are bound to cause side effects. However, anti-malarial medicine is usually well tolerated. Possible side effects from using anti-malarial medication can be nausea, headache, stomach pains, sun sensitivity and vaginal thrush (Doxycycline). With Lariam, there is a possibility that this can cause vivid dreams, dizziness or mood changes, which can be prescribed less for this reason. Any side effects should be reported to your healthcare provider.
You can buy anti-malarial medication from Pharmacy Planet online in the UK. Just fill in a brief clinical consultation for our clinicians to review. Once approved, your prescription will be dispensed and dispatched directly to your door.
