High cholesterol is when bad cholesterol, known as low-density lipoproteins (LDL) cholesterol, is found in large quantities throughout the blood. An excess of LDL cholesterol can cause plaque buildup within your arteries and cause you to become more at risk of heart disease and stroke.
High cholesterol doesn’t typically manifest in noticeable symptoms, which makes it harder for the patient to distinguish if they are suffering from it until a health scare occurs. Due to this, high cholesterol has been dubbed a ‘silent’ condition. It can only really be discovered if you get routine blood tests and are attentive to your LDL levels.
High cholesterol levels have several contributors. Some of these include the obvious few: an unhealthy diet packed with saturated fats and trans fats, a lack of exercise, smoking and alcoholism. However, some contributors to high cholesterol levels are less obvious and harder to control, such as having a genetic predisposition (familial hypercholesterolemia) and certain medical conditions like diabetes or hypothyroidism.
Though high cholesterol levels can be difficult to figure out, you can take preventative measures now to lower these levels. You can make simple lifestyle changes, such as: adopting a healthy diet, rich in fruits and vegetables as well as whole grains and lean proteins, developing an exercise routine to follow a few times a week, quitting smoking and lowering your alcohol intake. You can also get medicines, such as Atorvastatin or Colestyramine, prescribed to help you lower your cholesterol.
For adults, the usual recommendation is for a blood test to be conducted every 4-6 years. This is so you can observe if your LDL levels have taken a spike over a course of time and allow you to act accordingly. However, if you are predisposed to high cholesterol levels or you have a family history of high cholesterol levels, then it may be best to have these tests conducted more frequently to avoid any unwarranted health scares.
You can make simple lifestyle changes to help treat high cholesterol, like a healthy, balanced diet and regular exercise. However, your doctor may also recommend that you take prescription medicines such as statins, bile acid sequestrants and cholesterol absorption inhibitors. You can find high cholesterol prescription treatment on Pharmacy Planet. All you need to do is fill in an e-consultation, and our team of qualified UK clinicians, dispensers and dispatchers will take care of the rest.
