Hirsutism is a condition where a female experiences excessive and unwanted hair growth in areas associated more commonly with male-pattern hair growth, like the face, chest, back or abdomen. The hair that grows here is characterised as dark and coarse and usually spurred from hormonal imbalances, such as an elevated level of androgens, which is a male hormone. This condition may cause discomfort and a lack of confidence in women, so having the correct medication to combat this is important.

The most common cause is polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), which is a hormonal disorder that affects females via ovulation. It increases the levels of androgen in the body, which causes symptoms related to hirsutism, such as excessive hair growth. However, other causes of hirsutism can include congenital adrenal hyperplasia, Cushing’s syndrome, certain medicines like anabolic steroids and rare androgen-secreting tumours. There have, however, been some cases where hirsutism has not had a specific cause; this is known as idiopathic hirsutism.
