CUTIPLAST

A sterile island dressing that can be applied quickly, stays in place reliably, and does not cause unnecessary discomfort when it is removed is one of the most frequently needed items in any wound care kit. Cutiplast is a regulated medical device from Smith & Nephew. It is a sterile island dressing, a format consisting of a central absorbent wound contact pad mounted within an adhesive backing that extends beyond the pad on all sides to create an adhesive border. The backing is a fabric or non-woven material that is flexible and conforms to the skin surface.

Island dressings are among the most commonly used wound dressings across clinical and community settings because they serve a clear and practical purpose: they cover a wound, absorb any fluid the wound produces, and hold in place with the adhesive border without requiring tape or bandage fixation. For clean, dry, or lightly exuding wounds following minor surgery, injury, or everyday skin breaks, an island dressing provides straightforward and effective cover.

Cutiplast is individually packaged and sterile. Each dressing is taken from its sterile packaging and applied once. The sterile condition of the dressing matters for wound care, a sterile wound cover reduces the risk of introducing microorganisms to the wound at the time of application. This is relevant both at home and in clinical settings, and is the reason individually sterile-packed dressings are used rather than dressings cut from a roll or taken from an open container.

Cutiplast contains no active pharmaceutical ingredients. It does not treat infection, provide analgesic activity, or modify the wound healing environment beyond the physical cover and absorbency the pad provides. It is for clean wounds where wound cover and protection are the clinical need. Available in 4cm x 5cm and 8cm x 5cm.

Central Absorbent Pad

The pad at the centre of the dressing absorbs any wound exudate produced during the healing period and holds it within the pad material. This prevents fluid from pooling against the wound surface and keeps the wound area relatively clean and dry. The pad is designed to be non-adherent at its wound-facing surface - it sits against the wound without bonding to wound tissue, allowing the dressing to be removed without pulling on healing skin.

Adhesive Border

The adhesive backing extends beyond the pad on all sides, creating a border that holds the dressing against the surrounding intact skin. For most clean, lightly exuding wounds, the adhesive border is sufficient to keep the dressing in place during daily activity without secondary tape or bandaging. The adhesive is formulated to hold reliably on intact skin while releasing cleanly when the dressing is removed. This makes it suitable for regular use, including use on areas that move during normal activity.

Sterile Packaging

Each Cutiplast dressing is individually packaged in a sealed sterile pouch. Opening the pouch and applying the dressing to a prepared wound delivers a sterile wound cover to the wound surface. This is important because introducing microorganisms to an open wound at the time of dressing application is a preventable risk, and sterile packaging eliminates that risk provided the dressing is applied correctly.

Wound Cover and Protection

The physical cover provided by the dressing protects the wound from contamination by environmental dirt and microorganisms during the healing period. A covered wound is also less susceptible to accidental trauma, being caught or rubbed by clothing, for example, which can disrupt the healing tissue. The dressing provides a stable physical barrier for as long as it remains in place and is changed regularly.

Before Applying

• Wash hands thoroughly before handling the dressing.
• Clean the wound as directed - rinse with clean water or sterile saline and pat dry.
• Dry the surrounding skin so the adhesive border will adhere properly.

Application

• Open the sterile packaging carefully without touching the dressing surface.
• Select the appropriate size: 4cm x 5cm for small wounds or 8cm x 5cm for slightly larger or longer wound sites.
• Remove the protective paper from the adhesive border.
• Position the pad centrally over the wound so it covers the wound fully.
• Press the adhesive border down onto the surrounding skin, working from the centre outward on each side.

When to Change

• Change the dressing daily, when it becomes wet or soiled, or when it lifts from the skin.
• For clean surgical or procedural wounds being managed at home, follow the specific guidance given by the clinical team.
• At each change, assess the wound. If the wound shows signs of infection, seek clinical advice.

Cutiplast is for clean wounds. Do not apply to infected wounds without seeking clinical advice. Signs of wound infection include increasing redness around the wound extending beyond the wound edge, swelling, warmth, discharge that is cloudy, green, or has an offensive smell, increasing pain, or fever. If any of these are present, seek assessment from a GP or pharmacist rather than continuing to change the dressing at home.

Cutiplast 4cm x 5cm

A small island dressing suitable for minor cuts, small abrasions, superficial wounds from procedures such as blood tests or cannula sites, and other small wound areas where this pad size provides full wound coverage with adequate adhesive border on all sides.

Cutiplast 8cm x 5cm

A medium island dressing for slightly larger wounds, elongated wound sites, and areas where a 4cm x 5cm dressing does not provide adequate coverage. The 8cm x 5cm is a common dressing size for minor surgical wounds, suture line cover, and wound sites that run longer than they are wide.

In both sizes, ensure the adhesive border rests entirely on intact surrounding skin and that the central pad fully covers the wound area. If the wound is larger than either size can comfortably cover, seek clinical advice on an appropriate larger dressing.

Precautions

• Single use only. Do not reuse a dressing once removed.
• Do not use on infected wounds without clinical guidance.
• In patients with known adhesive sensitivity, apply with care and check the skin beneath the border at each change.
• Check the expiry date before use.

Adverse Effects

• Skin irritation or redness beneath the adhesive border, particularly in patients with sensitive skin or with prolonged dressing use in the same location.
• In patients who are allergic to the adhesive components, contact dermatitis may develop at the border sites. Discontinue use and seek pharmacist or GP advice.

Wounds Where Cutiplast Is Appropriate

• Clean, dry, or lightly exuding minor wounds including cuts, abrasions, minor lacerations, cannula or blood test sites, minor surgical incisions, and superficial procedural wounds
• Post operative wound cover for small clean surgical wounds where the clinical team has confirmed home dressing management is appropriate
• Adults and children - the 4cm x 5cm size is particularly suitable for smaller wound areas in children

When to Seek Clinical Advice Rather Than Self Manage

Most minor wounds can be managed at home with a sterile island dressing changed regularly. Clinical advice should be sought if the wound is not healing as expected after one to two weeks, if signs of infection develop at any point, if the wound is deeper or larger than initially apparent, or if the wound involves the face, a joint, or another anatomically significant area where specialist assessment may be appropriate.
