SILVERLON FLEX WOUND DRESSING

Wound infection and critical colonisation impair healing by diverting the immune response, damaging healthy tissue, and perpetuating the inflammatory state that prevents the wound from progressing through the normal stages of repair. A wound contact dressing that delivers a sustained antimicrobial effect at the wound surface addresses the microbial burden directly while maintaining contact with the wound bed. Silverlon Flex Wound Dressing is a regulated medical device from Argentum Medical. It is an antimicrobial wound contact dressing constructed from nylon fibres coated with metallic silver. The silver coating is the active component: when the dressing comes into contact with moisture from wound exudate or applied saline, silver ions are released from the fibre surface into the wound environment. These silver ions provide broad spectrum antimicrobial activity against bacteria and other microorganisms at the wound surface.

The "Flex" designation describes the physical properties of the dressing construction. The silver coated nylon fibre matrix is flexible and conformable, allowing the dressing to adapt to irregular wound surfaces, body contours, and wound beds that are not flat. This conformability ensures consistent contact between the silver fibres and the wound surface across the full dressing area, which is important for maintaining effective silver ion delivery throughout the wear period.

Silverlon Flex is a wound contact layer. It is applied directly to the wound surface and requires an appropriate secondary dressing to be applied over it. The secondary dressing manages wound exudate, provides cushioning and protection, and holds the Silverlon Flex dressing in position. The choice of secondary dressing depends on the exudate level and the wound management objectives.

Silverlon Flex is available in four sizes to accommodate different wound dimensions: 5cm x 5cm for small wounds, 10cm x 10cm for medium wounds, 10cm x 20cm for larger or elongated wounds, and 20cm x 20cm for large wound surfaces. A single dressing should cover the full wound surface to ensure complete antimicrobial contact.

Silverlon Flex Wound Dressing must always be used with an appropriate secondary dressing. Do not apply without secondary dressing cover. The dressing requires moisture to activate silver ion release. If the wound is dry, moisten the dressing with sterile saline before application. Do not use with oil-based ointments or creams applied directly to the wound, as these can inhibit silver ion release.

Silver Coated Nylon Fibre Construction

The Silverlon Flex dressing is constructed from nylon fibres that are coated with metallic silver. The silver coating adheres to the surface of each individual fibre, creating a large surface area of silver across the entire dressing structure. This high surface area silver contact is important for ion release: when the silver surface contacts moisture, a greater total surface area produces a greater number of silver ions per unit time than a smaller solid silver surface would.

Silver Ion Release and Antimicrobial Action

When the silver coated fibres are moistened by wound exudate or applied saline, silver ions are released from the metallic silver coating into the aqueous wound environment. Silver ions are toxic to bacteria through multiple mechanisms: they bind to bacterial cell membrane proteins and disrupt membrane integrity, they interfere with bacterial enzyme systems including those involved in respiration, and they can bind to bacterial DNA. This multi-target action provides broad spectrum antimicrobial activity and makes it difficult for bacteria to develop resistance through a single mutation.

Sustained Antimicrobial Effect

The silver coating on the Silverlon Flex fibres provides a reservoir of silver that releases ions progressively as long as moisture is present in the wound environment. This sustained release maintains an antimicrobial concentration at the wound surface throughout the dressing wear period. The dressing continues to release silver ions at each change interval as long as silver remains on the fibre surfaces.

Flexible Conformable Construction

The nylon fibre matrix of Silverlon Flex is flexible and drapes over irregular wound contours without folding or losing contact with the wound surface. Good wound contact is essential for effective silver ion delivery: areas of the dressing that are not in contact with the wound surface cannot deliver silver ions to that part of the wound bed. The conformable construction maximises the contact between the silver fibres and the wound surface across wounds of varying topography.

Wound Preparation

• Irrigate the wound with sterile saline before applying Silverlon Flex.
• Remove any necrotic or loose debris from the wound surface.
• If the wound is dry, moisten the Silverlon Flex dressing with sterile saline before application.

Application

• Select the appropriate size to cover the full wound surface.
• Apply Silverlon Flex directly to the wound bed with the silver fibre side in contact with the wound surface.
• Ensure the dressing covers the entire wound and extends slightly beyond the wound margins.
• Apply an appropriate secondary dressing over the Silverlon Flex.
• Secure the secondary dressing in place.

Change Frequency

• Change frequency depends on exudate levels and the secondary dressing used.
• Silverlon Flex can typically be worn for up to seven days depending on wound condition and exudate output.
• Change earlier if the secondary dressing is saturated, the wound condition changes, or signs of deterioration are present.
• At each change, assess the wound for healing progress and signs of infection.

Do not use Silverlon Flex with oil-based wound products applied to the wound surface. Oils and lipid-containing products coat the silver fibres and inhibit silver ion release into the wound environment. Apply Silverlon Flex to a wound surface that has been irrigated with saline, not treated with oil-based preparations.

Silverlon Flex 5cm x 5cm

A small dressing for minor wounds, surgical wound sites, and small chronic wound areas. Suited to acute and chronic wounds where the wound surface does not exceed the 5cm x 5cm dimensions.

Silverlon Flex 10cm x 10cm

A medium dressing for moderate wound sizes. Suited to pressure ulcers, venous leg ulcers, and other chronic wounds with a moderate surface area requiring antimicrobial wound contact coverage.

Silverlon Flex 10cm x 20cm

A rectangular dressing for longer or more elongated wounds. Suited to surgical incisions with infection concern, longer leg ulcers, and wound sites where a rectangular coverage area is more appropriate than a square format.

Silverlon Flex 20cm x 20cm

The largest size for wide wound surfaces. Suited to large pressure ulcers, large chronic wounds, and wound sites requiring extensive antimicrobial contact coverage. The 20cm x 20cm format can also be cut to size for irregular wound shapes if the product instructions permit this.

All four sizes use the same silver-coated nylon fibre construction. Size selection should ensure the full wound surface is covered.

When Not to Use Silverlon Flex

• Known sensitivity to silver or nylon.
• In combination with oil-based wound products applied to the wound surface.
• As a standalone dressing without a secondary dressing.

Precautions

• Moisten with sterile saline before applying to a dry wound.
• Cover with an appropriate secondary dressing.
• Avoid contact with oil-based preparations at the wound surface.
• Reassess the wound at each change. Discontinue if the wound condition does not improve under antimicrobial treatment or if signs of systemic infection are present.
• Clinical assessment is recommended before starting antimicrobial dressing therapy, particularly for deep or heavily infected wounds.

Adverse Effects

• Skin staining with silver compounds in some patients, though this is typically superficial and resolves.
• Sensitivity reaction to silver or nylon in susceptible individuals.
• If a wound treated with Silverlon Flex shows signs of deterioration or systemic infection, seek clinical assessment promptly.

Wounds Where Silverlon Flex Is Appropriate

• Critically colonised chronic wounds including venous leg ulcers, pressure ulcers, and diabetic foot wounds where high bacterial burden is impeding healing
• Infected wounds in conjunction with appropriate systemic antibiotic therapy if systemic infection is present
• Surgical wounds with wound infection or at elevated risk of wound infection
• Burns with infection concern where a flexible silver dressing can conform to the wound surface
• Any wound where a clinician has identified antimicrobial wound contact management as part of the wound care plan

Clinical Assessment Before Use

Antimicrobial dressings including silver dressings are recommended for use in clinically appropriate situations identified through wound assessment. The decision to use an antimicrobial dressing should be based on clinical signs of infection or critical colonisation such as increased pain, heat, erythema, wound breakdown, or delayed healing without other explanation. Use of antimicrobial dressings should be reviewed regularly and discontinued when the signs that prompted their use have resolved. Prolonged use of silver dressings without clinical review is not recommended.
