BIATAIN SUPER ADHESIVE DRESSING

Heavily exuding wounds challenge standard foam dressings in two ways: the foam fills with fluid too quickly and, in patients who rest against the wound, pressure drives absorbed fluid back toward the wound surface. Both problems increase maceration risk and dressing change frequency. Biatain Super Adhesive Dressing is designed specifically for this clinical challenge. The dressing incorporates a superabsorbent polymer layer that draws fluid away from the foam and holds it even when the dressing is under compression. Four sizes. Self-adhesive border. Biatain Super Adhesive Dressing is a Class IIb regulated medical device from Coloplast. It is a self-adhesive foam dressing with an additional superabsorbent polymer component built into the dressing construction. This polymer layer is what distinguishes it from standard Biatain Adhesive Foam and from other foam formats in the Biatain range. The dressing also has a wound contact layer, a foam absorbent body, a breathable outer film, and an adhesive border.

The superabsorbent polymer is a material used in applications where fluid needs to be absorbed rapidly and retained permanently rather than held loosely. When wound exudate reaches the polymer layer within the dressing, the polymer binds the fluid through a chemical process and does not release it under mechanical pressure. This is particularly relevant for wounds that are under compression or where the patient's body weight rests on the wound site, such as pressure ulcers on the sacrum, heels, and other pressure points. In standard foam dressings, compression can force absorbed fluid back toward the wound surface in a process known as rewetting. The polymer layer prevents this.

Biatain Super Adhesive Dressing is intended for wounds producing heavy or very heavy exudate volumes. Using it on a wound producing low or moderate exudate would not cause harm but is not the intended clinical application. Standard Biatain Adhesive Foam is better matched to moderate exudate. Biatain Super Adhesive Dressing is the appropriate choice when standard foam is saturating too quickly or when the wound site is under regular compression.

There are no active pharmaceutical ingredients. No silver, ibuprofen, or antimicrobial agent is present. Available in 10cm x 10cm, 12cm x 20cm, 12.5cm x 12.5cm, and 20cm x 20cm.

Biatain Super Adhesive Dressing contains no antimicrobial agent. It is not appropriate for infected wounds. If the wound shows clinical signs of infection, seek assessment before continuing dressing management. Use with care on fragile periwound skin where adhesive borders may cause trauma at removal.

Superabsorbent Polymer Layer

The polymer layer sits within the dressing construction above the foam absorbent body. As wound exudate moves through the wound contact surface and into the foam, a portion reaches the polymer layer and becomes permanently bound within the polymer structure through a process of absorption and chemical retention. Unlike fluid held loosely in a foam matrix, fluid bound within a superabsorbent polymer cannot be squeezed back toward the wound surface. This means that when the patient rests on the dressing, or when a compression bandage is applied over it, the fluid remains locked inside the dressing rather than being driven back toward the wound bed.

Foam Absorbent Body

The polyurethane foam layer provides the initial absorption of wound exudate and also gives the dressing its physical structure and cushioning. The foam absorbs fluid from the wound contact surface below and passes a portion upward toward the superabsorbent polymer above. The foam contributes to the overall fluid capacity of the dressing and provides a physical cushioning effect over the wound, which is clinically relevant on pressure-loaded sites.

Wound Contact Layer

The wound facing inner surface does not bond to moist wound tissue, allowing the dressing to be removed without pulling on the wound bed at each change. Exudate passes through this layer into the foam above during the wear period.

Adhesive Border and Outer Film

The adhesive border provides self-contained fixation on dry intact periwound skin. No secondary dressing is required. The breathable outer film allows moisture vapour to evaporate while remaining waterproof to external fluids.

Before Applying

• Wash hands and use gloves.
• Clean the wound as directed.
• Dry the skin surrounding the wound. The adhesive border requires dry intact skin.

Placing the Dressing

• Select the size that covers the wound fully with clear border margin: 10cm x 10cm, 12cm x 20cm, 12.5cm x 12.5cm, or 20cm x 20cm.
• Position the dressing over the wound with the foam pad centred over the wound bed.
• Remove the release liner and press the adhesive border onto the surrounding skin.
• No secondary dressing is required.
• Note the date and time of application.

Removal

• Lift one corner of the adhesive border and peel slowly back along the skin surface.
• If resistance is felt, dampen the border with water or saline to assist release.
• Assess the wound and periwound skin at every change.
• If the wound is producing less exudate than when this dressing was chosen, consider whether a less absorbent format is now more appropriate.

Biatain Super Adhesive Dressing has a waterproof outer film and can be worn during showering. Avoid prolonged submersion. Pat dry after washing and confirm the border is still adhering. Replace if the border has lifted.

Biatain Super Adhesive Dressing 10cm x 10cm

A medium square suited to moderate-sized heavily exuding wounds where the 10cm x 10cm foam pad and superabsorbent polymer combination provides significantly more fluid capacity than a standard foam of the same footprint.

Biatain Super Adhesive Dressing 12cm x 20cm

A rectangular format for elongated heavily exuding wound sites, including lower limb wounds and other sites where the wound is longer than it is wide. The 12cm x 20cm provides extended coverage along the wound course while retaining the superabsorbent polymer capacity throughout the pad area.

Biatain Super Adhesive Dressing 12.5cm x 12.5cm

A slightly larger square than the 10cm x 10cm, suited to wounds where additional pad area improves coverage while remaining within a manageable dressing size for community and home wound management.

Biatain Super Adhesive Dressing 20cm x 20cm

The largest size in this range, providing broad coverage with high fluid capacity for extensive heavily exuding wound areas. Suited to large pressure ulcers, extensive venous leg ulcer areas, and other large chronic wounds under clinical supervision where standard foam has proven insufficient.

In all sizes, confirm the foam pad covers the wound in full and the border rests on intact periwound skin.

When Biatain Super Adhesive Dressing Is Not Appropriate

• Infected wounds - no antimicrobial action.
• Wounds producing low or moderate exudate - this dressing is designed for heavy to very heavy exudate volumes.
• Known allergy or sensitivity to the adhesive border or dressing components.
• Dry wounds where foam coverage is not clinically indicated.

Precautions

• Single use only.
• Assess periwound skin at every change. Conventional acrylic adhesive borders can cause trauma on very fragile skin over repeated changes.
• If infection develops during use, change to an antimicrobial dressing and seek clinical assessment.
• Monitor wound exudate levels. If output reduces significantly, a standard foam format may be more appropriate.
• Remove before MRI.

Adverse Effects

• Skin irritation or stripping at the adhesive border on fragile periwound skin.
• Wound desiccation if the wound transitions from heavy to low exudate and the dressing is not changed to a less absorbent format.

When Biatain Super Adhesive Dressing Is the Appropriate Choice

• Heavily or very heavily exuding wounds where standard foam dressings are saturating within a clinically unacceptable wear time
• Wounds on pressure-loaded sites - sacrum, heels, greater trochanters, where the patient rests against the wound and rewetting from a standard foam is a concern
• Wounds where extending the dressing wear interval is clinically beneficial and the superabsorbent polymer capacity makes this achievable
• Adults under clinical supervision for pressure ulcer and complex wound management

Biatain Super Adhesive Dressing Within the Biatain Range

The Biatain range covers foam dressings from standard absorbency through to the enhanced capacity of Biatain Super Adhesive Dressing. Standard Biatain Adhesive Foam is appropriate for moderate to heavy exudate. Biatain Super Adhesive Dressing is the step up for wounds where even heavy foam is insufficient, or where preventing fluid rewet under compression is the clinical priority. The selection decision is made on wound exudate volume and whether the wound is subject to sustained compression during the wear period.
