How Is Foundayo Different from Wegovy Tablets?

Weight loss injections have had quite a lot of attention over the past few years. Now, the tablets would also like a moment.

Foundayo and Wegovy tablets are both once-daily GLP-1 medicines authorised in the UK for weight management. They work in similar ways, but they are not the same treatment in different packaging.

They contain different active ingredients, follow different dosing schedules and, perhaps most importantly for your morning routine, have very different instructions around food and drink.

Let's make the differences a little easier to swallow.

First Things First: What Are Foundayo and Wegovy Tablets?

Foundayo is the brand name for orforglipron, a daily GLP-1 tablet developed by Eli Lilly. Wegovy tablets contain semaglutide and are made by Novo Nordisk.

Both medicines act on GLP-1 receptors involved in appetite. They may help you feel fuller for longer, experience less hunger and manage food cravings, which can make a reduced-calorie diet feel more achievable.

Both are prescription-only treatments and should be used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.

The tablets provide support. They do not make balanced meals and regular movement optional extras.

The Main Differences at a Glance

The milligram figures cannot be compared directly. A higher number on the packet does not automatically mean that one medicine is stronger or more effective than the other.

Milligrams are not points on a scoreboard.

Their Morning Routines Are Very Different

This is likely to be the most noticeable practical difference.

Foundayo can be taken at any time of day, with or without food. There are no special restrictions around how much water you drink when taking it. The tablet should still be swallowed whole rather than broken, crushed or chewed.

Wegovy tablets require more planning. They should be taken whole on an empty stomach after fasting for at least eight hours, with a sip of water. You must then wait at least 30 minutes before eating or drinking because doing so sooner can reduce how much semaglutide your body absorbs.

If you are somebody who wakes up and heads directly for the kettle, Wegovy tablets may require your cup of tea to practise a little patience.

Do They Follow the Same Dosing Schedule?

No. Both treatments begin at a lower dose and increase gradually, but their dose levels are different.

Foundayo starts at 0.8mg once daily before moving through 2.5mg and 5.5mg. If needed, the dose may then increase to 9mg, 14.5mg and a maximum of 17.2mg.

Wegovy tablets start at 1.5mg once daily before increasing to 4mg, 9mg and then 25mg.

You will usually remain on each dose for at least one month. Dose increases are decided by your prescriber based on your response and how well you tolerate the medicine.

Do not speed up the schedule yourself. Your digestive system does not appreciate surprise promotions.

Are the Side Effects Different?

There is considerable overlap because both medicines act on GLP-1 receptors.

Common effects can include:

• Feeling sick.
• Vomiting.
• Diarrhoea.
• Constipation.
• Abdominal discomfort.
• Indigestion.

However, the complete safety information is not identical. Your medical history, existing medicines and the specific warnings attached to each treatment will need to be considered during a clinical assessment.

Severe, persistent abdominal pain, especially if it travels to your back or is accompanied by nausea or vomiting, requires urgent medical attention because it may be a sign of pancreatitis.

Which Tablet Helps You Lose More Weight?

There is not a simple or responsible answer.

Foundayo and Wegovy tablets have been studied in separate clinical trials involving different participants and study designs. Results from one trial should not be placed directly beside results from another as though both medicines competed under identical conditions.

There is currently no direct head-to-head trial establishing that one tablet is better for every patient.

Your likely response is only one part of the decision. Suitability, side effects, other medicines and whether you can follow the dosing instructions consistently all matter.

Can You Switch Between Them?

Potentially, but only with guidance from a qualified prescriber.

Do not take Foundayo and Wegovy together or create your own switching timetable. Your clinician will need to consider your current dose, your last tablet, your side effects and whether the alternative treatment is appropriate.
