What is Lyxumia?
Lyxumia injectable solution is indicated in the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus in adults to achieve glycemic control, in combination with hypoglycemic drugs and/or basal insulin when these, together with diet and exercise, do not provide adequate glycemic control.
How does it work?
The main active ingredient in Lyxumia, Lixisenatide is a selective GLP-1 receptor agonist. The GLP-1 receptor is the target of native GLP-1, an endogenous incretin-like hormone that enhances glucose-dependent insulin secretion by pancreatic beta cells.
The action of lixisenatide is mediated by a specific interaction with GLP-1 receptors that leads to an increase in intracellular cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP). Lixisenatide stimulates insulin secretion when the blood glucose level increases, but not in normoglycemia, which reduces the risk of hypoglycemia. In addition, it suppresses the secretion of glucagon. In the case of hypoglycemia, the rescue mechanism is maintained by glucagon secretion.
Lixisenatide slows gastric emptying, reducing the rate of incorporation of glucose from food into the circulatory system.
What are the benefits of taking it?
Lyxumia contains the active substance lixisenatide. It is an injectable medication that is used to help your body control its blood sugar level when it is too high. It is prescribed to adult patients with type 2 diabetes.
Lyxumia is used together with other diabetes medicines when there is insufficient control of your blood sugar levels, such as:
oral antidiabetics (such as metformin, pioglitazone, sulfonylureas) and/or, basal insulin, a type of insulin that works all-day.
How do I use it and its dosage?
Always take this medicine exactly as your doctor, pharmacist or nurse has told you. If in doubt, ask your doctor, pharmacist
Side effects & precautions
Like all medicines, Lyxumia can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
Some serious allergic reactions (such as anaphylaxis) have been reported infrequently in patients receiving Lyxumia. You should seek medical attention immediately if you experience symptoms such as swelling of the face, tongue, or throat that makes it difficult for you to breathe.
Stop giving Lyxumia and contact your doctor immediately if you notice any of the following serious side effects:
Persistent and severe abdominal pain (stomach area) that can reach your back, as well as nausea and vomiting, as this can be a sign of your inflamed pancreas (pancreatitis).
The most frequently reported side effects with Lyxumia that may affect more than 1 in 10 users (frequency: very common) were nausea (feeling sick) and vomiting. These side effects were mostly mild and generally disappeared over time.
Other adverse effects
Very common: may affect more than 1 in 10 people
- Diarrhea
- Headache
- Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia ("hiccups") especially when Lyxumia is used with insulin or a sulfonylurea
Warning signs of low blood sugar may include cold sweats, cold, pale skin, headache, drowsiness, weakness, dizziness, confusion or irritability, feeling hungry, rapid heartbeat, and nervousness. Your doctor will tell you what to do if you experience a drop in sugar.
This is more likely to happen if you are taking either a sulfonylurea or basal insulin at the same time. Your doctor may reduce your dose of these medications before you start using Lyxumia.
Common: may affect up to 1 in 10 people
- Flu (influenza)
- Cold (upper respiratory infection)
- Feeling dizzy
- Indigestion (dyspepsia)
- Back pain
- Cystitis
- Viral infection
- Low blood sugar (when taking Lyxumia with metformin)
- Drowsiness Reactions at the injection site (such as itching).
Uncommon: may affect up to 1 in 100 people
- Urticaria

Lyxumia is a prescription medication designed for adults with type 2 diabetes who need better blood sugar control. It is normally prescribed when diet and exercise alone or other oral diabetes medications are not sufficient. This medication is suitable for individuals who require an additional treatment to regulate glucose levels but do not require insulin therapy as their primary treatment. Lyxumia is not for those with type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis. It is also not recommended for people with severe gastrointestinal issues, those who have a history of pancreatitis, or those who are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Lyxumia starts to work normally from the first dose, but it may take a few weeks before you notice significant changes in your blood sugar levels. The medication works by stimulating insulin secretion and reducing glucagon levels, which helps lower blood glucose after meals. Most patients see improvements within three to six months of consistent use, especially when combined with healthy eating and regular physical activity. However, the effectiveness may vary depending on your diet, lifestyle, and other diabetes treatments.
Yes, this can be used with other diabetes medications, such as metformin or basal insulin, for better blood sugar control. Patients using Lyxumia with insulin should not mix the injections in the same syringe but instead, administer them separately. Your healthcare professional will guide you on the best way to combine these treatments safely.
If you miss a dose of Lyxumia, take it as soon as you remember, provided it is at least one hour before your next meal. However, if it’s already close to the time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take two doses to make up for the missed one, as this can lead to unwanted side effects, including nausea, vomiting, or low blood sugar. To prevent this from happening, try setting a daily reminder on your phone or using a medication tracking app.
To store this medication, it is essential to keep it in the fridge at a temperature between 2°C and 8°C. Do not freeze the medication, as freezing can damage the active ingredients and make it unusable. Once in use, you can store the Lyxumia pre-filled pen at room temperature (below 30°C) for up to 14 days. Keep it away from direct sunlight, heat, and moisture. Always put the cap back on after use to protect the solution from light exposure. Do not use it if it has expired or been improperly stored. Dispose of it properly by following local pharmaceutical waste disposal guidelines or return it to a pharmacy for safe disposal.
Yes, you can travel with Lyxumia, but you need to take certain precautions to keep your medication safe and effective. Always carry your pen in its original packaging, along with a copy of your prescription and a note from your healthcare provider, especially when flying, in case the airline asks for verification. Ensure you have enough medication for your trip, plus some extra in case of delays or lost luggage. You should also check local regulations on carrying injectable medication, as some countries may have specific requirements.
