Valupak Calcium & Vitamin D Tablets | Combined Supplement for Bone Health & Skeletal Support
Calcium and vitamin D work together as two of the most important nutrients for maintaining strong bones and supporting overall skeletal health throughout life. Valupak Calcium and Vitamin D tablets provide 400 mg of calcium alongside vitamin D3 in a convenient daily supplement, supporting bone strength, normal muscle function, and the body's ability to absorb and use calcium effectively. Available without a prescription, Valupak offers a practical and affordable approach to daily calcium support and vitamin supplementation for adults who want to support their bone health as part of a healthy lifestyle.
What Is Valupak Calcium and Vitamin D?
Valupak Calcium and Vitamin D is a food supplement manufactured by Valupak, available without a prescription. Each tablet provides calcium carbonate 400 mg alongside vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol), working together to support bone health and normal calcium absorption. The combination of calcium and vitamin D in a single tablet is convenient for daily use and reflects the established nutritional relationship between these two nutrients.
Calcium is the most abundant mineral in the body and is essential for the development and maintenance of bones and teeth. Approximately 99 percent of the body's calcium is stored in bones and teeth, where it provides structural strength and rigidity. The remaining one percent circulates in the blood and tissues, where it plays roles in muscle contraction, nerve signal transmission, and blood clotting.
Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that is produced in the skin when it is exposed to sunlight. In the UK, sunlight is insufficient for adequate vitamin D production for much of the year, and many adults have low vitamin D levels, particularly during autumn and winter. Vitamin D is essential for the normal absorption of calcium from food and supplements. Without adequate vitamin D, the body cannot absorb calcium efficiently, even when dietary intake is good. The NHS recommends that all adults in the UK consider taking a daily vitamin D supplement of 10 mcg (400 IU) throughout autumn and winter.
How Does Valupak Calcium and Vitamin D Work?
Calcium and vitamin D each play distinct but closely connected roles in supporting bone health and skeletal strength.
Calcium and Bone Health
Calcium contributes to the maintenance of normal bones and teeth. Bones are living tissue that continuously remodel throughout life, with calcium being deposited and resorbed in an ongoing cycle. When dietary calcium intake is consistently low, the body withdraws calcium from bones to maintain blood calcium levels. Over time, this can reduce bone density. Adequate calcium intake supports the maintenance of normal bone mineral density as part of a balanced diet and healthy lifestyle. Calcium also contributes to normal muscle function and normal neurotransmission.
Vitamin D and Calcium Absorption
Vitamin D contributes to the normal absorption of calcium from the intestine. When vitamin D levels are adequate, the intestine absorbs calcium efficiently from food and supplements. When vitamin D is deficient, calcium absorption falls significantly. This is why calcium and vitamin D are frequently recommended together. Vitamin D also contributes directly to the maintenance of normal bones, normal muscle function, and normal immune system function. The combination of calcium and vitamin D works synergistically: the vitamin D enables the body to actually use the calcium provided by the supplement.
Vitamin D and Muscle Function
Vitamin D contributes to the maintenance of normal muscle function. Adequate vitamin D levels are associated with supporting normal muscle strength. This is of particular relevance for older adults, in whom vitamin D deficiency is more common and in whom muscle weakness can affect daily functioning. Maintaining adequate calcium support and vitamin D levels through daily supplementation forms part of a comprehensive approach to skeletal health across the lifespan.
How to Take Valupak Calcium and Vitamin D
Always read the product label before taking Valupak Calcium and Vitamin D. The following guidance reflects standard recommendations for calcium and vitamin D supplements.
- Take one to two tablets daily, as directed on the product label or as advised by your pharmacist or GP.
- Tablets can be taken with or without food. Taking calcium supplements with food may improve absorption for some individuals.
- Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water.
- Take at a consistent time each day as part of your daily routine.
- Do not exceed the stated dose. Taking excessive amounts of calcium or vitamin D over a prolonged period can be harmful.
- If you take other supplements or medicines, allow a gap of at least two hours between calcium supplements and certain medicines, particularly levothyroxine, some antibiotics (tetracyclines and fluoroquinolones), iron supplements, and bisphosphonates. Calcium can reduce the absorption of these medicines if taken at the same time.
If you are unsure about how many tablets to take, or how this supplement fits alongside your other medicines, speak to a pharmacist before starting. A pharmacist can help you plan the right timing and dose for your individual situation.
Dosage and Strength Available
Valupak Calcium and Vitamin D 400 mg Tablets
Each tablet provides 400 mg of calcium (from calcium carbonate) alongside vitamin D3. The 400 mg calcium content per tablet means that taking two tablets daily provides 800 mg of calcium. The UK reference nutrient intake for calcium is 700 mg per day for adults, rising to 1200 mg per day for adults over 50 in some clinical guidelines where supplementation is recommended alongside dietary calcium.
Many adults in the UK obtain around 400 to 500 mg of calcium from their diet each day if they consume moderate amounts of dairy. A supplement providing 400 to 800 mg per day can help to bridge the gap between typical dietary intake and the recommended daily amount, supporting nutrient support alongside a balanced diet.
The vitamin D3 content supports normal calcium absorption from both food and the supplement. The NHS recommends 10 mcg (400 IU) of vitamin D per day for all adults in the UK throughout the year, and particularly during autumn and winter. Valupak Calcium and Vitamin D provide vitamin D at a level consistent with this recommendation. Always read the product label to confirm the exact vitamin D content per tablet.
Side Effects and Safety Information
Valupak Calcium and Vitamin D is well tolerated by most adults when taken at the recommended dose. Side effects are uncommon.
Possible Side Effects
- Mild gastrointestinal effects such as constipation, bloating, or wind. These are more common with calcium carbonate than with other calcium salt forms. Taking the tablet with food or splitting the dose across the day can help.
- Nausea in some individuals.
Signs of Too Much Calcium (Hypercalcaemia)
Taking calcium supplements at doses much higher than recommended for prolonged periods can lead to hypercalcaemia (too much calcium in the blood). Symptoms include nausea, vomiting, confusion, excessive thirst, and passing urine more frequently than usual. If you experience any of these symptoms, stop taking the supplement and speak to your GP.
Signs of Too Much Vitamin D (Hypervitaminosis D)
Vitamin D toxicity from supplements is rare but can occur with very high doses taken over a long period. Symptoms overlap with hypercalcaemia and include nausea, weakness, and confusion. The vitamin D content in Valupak Calcium and Vitamin D at the recommended dose is within safe limits. Do not take multiple supplements containing vitamin D at the same time without checking the total daily dose.
When to Speak to a Pharmacist or GP
- If you take prescription medicines, particularly levothyroxine, antibiotics, bisphosphonates, or digoxin, speak to a pharmacist before taking calcium supplements.
- If you have been diagnosed with hypercalcaemia, hyperparathyroidism, sarcoidosis, or kidney stones, do not take calcium supplements without speaking to your GP first.
- If you have kidney disease, speak to your GP before taking calcium or vitamin D supplements, as both may need to be adjusted or monitored.
Who Can Take Valupak Calcium and Vitamin D?
This Supplement May Be Suitable For:
- Adults who have low dietary calcium intake, for example those who do not regularly consume dairy products or calcium rich foods.
- Older adults, particularly women after the menopause, in whom adequate calcium intake and vitamin D levels are important for maintaining normal bone density.
- Adults who spend little time outdoors or who cover their skin for cultural or religious reasons, and who may have low vitamin D levels.
- Adults in the UK during autumn and winter, when sunlight is insufficient to maintain vitamin D levels through skin synthesis alone.
- Adults who have been advised by their GP or healthcare professional to take a calcium and vitamin D supplement.
- Adults following a vegan or dairy free diet who may benefit from calcium supplementation.
Speak to a Pharmacist or GP Before Taking If You:
- Have hypercalcaemia, hyperparathyroidism, renal calculi (kidney stones), or sarcoidosis.
- Have kidney disease or impaired kidney function.
- Take prescription medicines including levothyroxine, tetracycline or fluoroquinolone antibiotics, bisphosphonates (such as alendronic acid), digoxin, or iron supplements.
- Are already taking other calcium or vitamin D supplements and wish to ensure your total daily intake remains within safe limits.
- Are pregnant or breastfeeding and wish to confirm the appropriate dose for your situation.
Interactions with Medicines
Calcium can reduce the absorption of certain medicines if taken at the same time. Allow at least two hours between taking Valupak Calcium and Vitamin D and the following:
- Levothyroxine (thyroid hormone replacement).
- Tetracycline and fluoroquinolone antibiotics.
- Bisphosphonates such as alendronic acid (used for osteoporosis).
- Iron supplements.
- Digoxin.
If you take any of these medicines, speak to your pharmacist before starting a calcium supplement so they can advise on the best timing for your individual situation.

Valupak Calcium and Vitamin D provide calcium and vitamin D3 together in a single daily tablet to support bone health. Calcium contributes to the maintenance of normal bones and teeth. Vitamin D contributes to the normal absorption of calcium from food and supplements, and to the maintenance of normal bones and muscle function. Together they work as complementary nutrients for supporting skeletal health and overall bone strength as part of a balanced diet. The supplement is suitable for adults and does not require a prescription.
Calcium and vitamin D supplements are particularly relevant for older adults, especially women after the menopause, as maintaining adequate calcium intake and vitamin D levels is important for supporting normal bone health in this group. They are also relevant for adults with low dietary calcium intake, those who spend little time outdoors, people who cover their skin for cultural or religious reasons, and all adults in the UK during autumn and winter when sunlight is insufficient. The NHS recommends a daily vitamin D supplement of 10 mcg (400 IU) for all adults throughout the year.
Calcium can reduce the absorption of certain medicines if taken at the same time. Allow at least two hours between taking calcium supplements and levothyroxine, tetracycline or fluoroquinolone antibiotics, bisphosphonates such as alendronic acid, iron supplements, and digoxin. Taking them too close together may reduce how well these medicines are absorbed. If you take any prescription medicines regularly, speak to your pharmacist before starting a calcium supplement so they can advise on the best timing for your daily routine.
Two tablets of Valupak Calcium and Vitamin D provide 800 mg of calcium. The UK reference nutrient intake for calcium is 700 mg per day for adults. Many adults obtain around 400 to 500 mg of calcium from a typical diet, so taking one or two tablets per day helps to bridge the gap between dietary intake and the recommended amount. The appropriate number of tablets for you depends on your diet and any advice from your GP. Do not exceed the stated dose on the product label without medical guidance.
Yes, for most healthy adults, taking calcium and vitamin D at the recommended doses is safe for daily long term use. The vitamin D in Valupak Calcium and Vitamin D is at a level consistent with NHS guidance. The calcium content at one to two tablets per day is within safe limits for most adults when combined with a typical diet. However, people with kidney disease, hypercalcaemia, hyperparathyroidism, sarcoidosis, or a history of kidney stones should speak to their GP before taking calcium supplements.
Calcium carbonate and calcium citrate are two different forms of calcium used in supplements. Calcium carbonate (used in Valupak) contains a higher proportion of elemental calcium per tablet, making it a convenient and cost effective choice. It is best absorbed when taken with food. Calcium citrate contains less elemental calcium per tablet but is better absorbed when taken without food, making it useful for people who take acid suppressing medicines (such as proton pump inhibitors) or those with reduced stomach acid. For most healthy adults taking supplements with meals, calcium carbonate is effective and well tolerated.
Check the vitamin D content of your multivitamin before adding a separate calcium and vitamin D supplement. Many multivitamins contain vitamin D, and the combined total from multiple supplements should not exceed the recommended safe upper limit of 100 mcg (4000 IU) per day for adults. Adding Valupak Calcium and Vitamin D to a multivitamin that already contains vitamin D will increase your total daily vitamin D intake. For most people, the combined total from a multivitamin and Valupak will remain well within safe limits but check the labels to be sure.
Calcium and vitamin D are both important nutrients during pregnancy. The NHS recommends 10 mcg (400 IU) of vitamin D daily for pregnant women. Calcium requirements also increase during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Valupak Calcium and Vitamin D at the recommended dose is generally suitable during pregnancy, but it is advisable to speak to your midwife or GP before starting or changing any supplements during pregnancy to confirm the appropriate dose for your individual circumstances.
