COMFEEL+

Hydrocolloid dressings work by keeping a wound moist as it heals, creating the environment in which the body's own repair processes can function without interference from drying or scabbing. Comfeel Plus is a hydrocolloid wound dressing from Coloplast. The dressing absorbs wound exudate and converts it into a soft gel that stays at the wound surface, maintaining the moist conditions that support healing. It is self-adhesive, waterproof, and available in ten configurations across three format variants: standard, transparent, and contour. No prescription is required.

Comfeel Plus is a Class IIb regulated medical device from Coloplast. It is a self-adhesive hydrocolloid wound dressing. The wound-facing layer contains a hydrocolloid matrix based on carboxymethylcellulose (CMC). The outer layer is a waterproof polyurethane film that keeps external fluids out while allowing moisture vapour to pass through. The self-adhesive border holds the dressing to the surrounding skin without secondary fixation.

Hydrocolloids are one of the most established dressing materials in wound care. The word hydrocolloid refers to a material that absorbs water and forms a gel when it does so. In Comfeel Plus, this is the CMC-based matrix on the wound contact side. When wound exudate touches the matrix, the material swells and gels, holding the fluid in a soft mass close to the wound surface rather than drawing it away and drying the wound out. This gel layer maintains the moist wound environment that research in wound biology associates with faster and better quality healing compared to wounds allowed to dry and scab.

Comfeel Plus is available in three format variants within the range. The standard opaque format is the general-purpose hydrocolloid for wound management. The transparent format has a clear film outer layer that allows visual monitoring of the wound without removing the dressing. The contour format has a shaped design suited to anatomically curved or awkward sites where a flat square dressing would lift or wrinkle, compromising the seal.

No active pharmaceutical ingredients are present. Comfeel Plus does not treat infection and is not appropriate for clinically infected wounds. Ten configurations are stocked, ranging from small adhesive patches to larger sheet formats.

Comfeel Plus is not suitable for infected wounds or deep cavity wounds. Do not use on wounds with clinical signs of infection. Do not use on wounds that require packing, cavity dressings, or surgical management. The gel formation within the dressing is a normal feature of hydrocolloid use and is not a sign of infection. When removed, the gel may be yellow or brown in colour and have a characteristic odour; this is normal and should not be confused with wound infection.

Hydrocolloid Gel Formation

The CMC matrix on the wound contact surface absorbs exudate as the wound produces it. As CMC takes on fluid, the matrix swells and softens into a gel. This gel forms a layer between the dressing and the wound surface that keeps the wound consistently moist. A moist wound environment reduces the pain of dressing changes because the dressing does not dry and stick to wound tissue, and it supports the cellular processes involved in tissue repair - cell migration, angiogenesis, and the formation of granulation tissue all proceed more readily in moist conditions.

Waterproof Outer Film

The polyurethane outer film is waterproof, allowing patients to shower and bathe while the dressing is in place without the wound being exposed to external water. The film is moisture vapour permeable, meaning it allows evaporation of water vapour from within the dressing, which prevents the wound environment from becoming excessively wet. This balance between moisture retention and vapour transmission is a key property of hydrocolloid dressings.

The Transparent Format

Comfeel Plus Transparent uses the same hydrocolloid matrix but with a clear film outer layer rather than an opaque one. The transparency allows a clinician or carer to observe the wound and the gel formation beneath the dressing without removing it. This reduces the number of unnecessary dressing changes, a dressing need not be changed simply to inspect the wound and limits the disturbance to the wound healing environment.

The Contour Format

Comfeel Plus Contour is cut to a shaped profile that accommodates curved body sites. Flat rectangular or square hydrocolloid dressings applied to sites such as elbows, heels, and the sacral area are prone to lifting at the corners and edges because the flat geometry does not follow the body contour. The contour design reduces this problem by removing the sharp corners and shaping the border to follow the curved anatomy, maintaining the peripheral seal that keeps the wound environment stable.

Preparation

• Wash hands and use gloves.
• Clean the wound as directed.
• Dry the periwound skin. The self-adhesive hydrocolloid border adheres to dry intact skin.

Application

• Select the appropriate configuration for the wound size and site.
• Remove the release liner from the dressing.
• Apply the wound contact surface directly over the wound, centring the dressing.
• Smooth the border down from the centre outward to avoid trapping air.
• For the transparent format, position so the wound is visible through the window.
• For the contour format, ensure the shaped border follows the anatomical contour of the site.
• No secondary dressing is required.

Removal and Change

• Change when the gel reaches the border of the dressing, when the border lifts, or when clinically indicated.
• To remove, lift one corner and peel slowly back along the skin surface.
• The yellowish or brownish gel visible on removal is normal - it is absorbed wound exudate within the hydrocolloid matrix and is not a sign of infection.
• Assess the wound at each change and decide whether Comfeel Plus remains appropriate.

Comfeel Plus can be worn during showering and bathing. The waterproof outer film prevents external water from reaching the wound. Avoid prolonged submersion. After bathing, pat the dressing dry and check that the border is still adhering to the surrounding skin.

Comfeel Plus Standard 4cm x 6cm - Pack of 30

A small adhesive patch suited to minor wounds, superficial abrasions, blister sites, and small localised wound areas. The pack of 30 provides a good supply for ongoing use across smaller wounds or for patients managing multiple small sites.

Comfeel Plus Standard 10cm x 10cm - Pack of 10

A medium square format suited to moderate-sized wounds where the standard opaque hydrocolloid provides appropriate coverage. Versatile across wound types and body locations.

Comfeel Plus Standard 15cm x 15cm - Pack of 10

A larger square for more extensive wound areas where a 10cm x 10cm dressing would not provide adequate wound bed coverage.

Comfeel Plus Transparent 5cm x 7cm - Pack of 10

A small transparent format for minor wounds where visual monitoring of the wound without dressing removal is clinically useful or preferred.

Comfeel Plus Transparent 6cm x 8cm - Pack of 10

A slightly larger small transparent format, suited to wounds slightly exceeding the 5cm x 7cm coverage area where transparency is the priority.

Comfeel Plus Transparent 9cm x 14cm - Pack of 10

A medium rectangular transparent format suited to elongated wound sites where wound monitoring through the dressing is clinically indicated.

Comfeel Plus Transparent 10cm x 10cm - Pack of 10

A medium square transparent format equivalent in area to the standard 10cm x 10cm but with a clear outer layer for wound monitoring without removal.

Comfeel Plus Transparent 15cm x 15cm - Pack of 5

A larger square transparent format for more extensive wound areas where the wound monitoring benefit of transparency is needed alongside broader coverage.

Comfeel Plus Transparent 15cm x 20cm - Pack of 5

The largest transparent format in the range, for extensive wound areas requiring broad hydrocolloid coverage with the option of visual monitoring.

Comfeel Plus Contour 9cm x 11cm - Pack of 10

The contour format in a single size, shaped to accommodate anatomically curved sites where flat dressings lift at the edges. Suited to elbows, heels, sacral areas, and other curved wound locations.

All configurations contain the same CMC-based hydrocolloid matrix. Format and size selection is based on wound dimensions, site anatomy, and whether wound monitoring through the dressing is clinically indicated.

Do Not Use Comfeel Plus If

• The wound shows clinical signs of infection - spreading redness, swelling, offensive odour beyond normal hydrocolloid gel, increasing pain, or fever.
• The wound is a deep cavity, undermined wound, or requires packing.
• The wound is dry - hydrocolloid dressings are designed for exuding wounds and are not appropriate for dry wound surfaces.
• Known sensitivity to CMC, polyurethane, or any component of the dressing.

Precautions

• Single use. Do not reuse.
• The yellowish gel on removal is normal. Do not mistake normal gel formation for infection.
• Assess the wound at each change for signs of infection.
• Remove before MRI.

Adverse Effects

• Skin maceration under the dressing if worn longer than the absorption capacity allows.
• Skin irritation at the adhesive border.
• In patients with fragile periwound skin, border removal may cause skin stripping over repeated changes.

Suitable Wound Types and Patients

• Low to moderately exuding clean wounds including pressure ulcers, venous leg ulcers, minor burns, skin tears, donor sites, and superficial wounds where moist wound healing is the clinical approach
• Patients who benefit from a waterproof self-adhesive hydrocolloid that can remain in place during bathing and daily activity
• Wounds on anatomically curved sites where the contour format maintains better peripheral adhesion than flat formats
• Wounds under clinical monitoring where the transparent format reduces the need for dressing removal to assess the wound
• Adults and children where clinically directed

Choosing Between Standard, Transparent, and Contour

All three Comfeel Plus formats use the same hydrocolloid gel mechanism. Choose standard for general wound management where wound appearance through the dressing is not a priority. Choose transparent when wound monitoring without removal is clinically useful. Choose contour when the wound is on a curved anatomical site where flat dressings have difficulty maintaining their peripheral seal. The ten configurations cover wound sizes from small patches to large sheet formats across all three variants.
